What I Wish I Woulda Known (before starting law school)

Before starting law school, I wish I would’ve known that professors are only human. No, seriously.

That is, law professors (not completely unlike any other professor) can be quite intimidating. One of potentially many reasons why that is is because it is not unusual to have a law professor teach you from a textbook that he authored himself!

Law professors’ resumes can read like impressive characters that exist only in fantastical literature books. Attending top tiered schools, having published numerous articles in national publications, perhaps having even clerked or argued before the Supreme Court!

Still, we must remember. Professors are still people. Human. And, yes, that means not completely flawless gods that are only reachable once you prove yourself worthy. In fact, if you are already admitted to law school, find yourself sitting in front of a law professor in class, that alone is proof that you are already worthy.

Therefore, when you find yourself with questions about what a professor expects from you, the meaning of the reading you did for that day, or how to study for her exam, take this advice: relax. Go talk to her. You’ll find that she is really quite human afterall: most likely open to hearing your questions and possibly even quite interested in helping you.
